for Sunday, October 25, 2015, Third Sunday in the Season of Creation, Readings: Isaiah 42:5-9, Psalm 133, Deuteronomy 30, Mark 10:46-52

        Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD...   [Isaiah 42: 5-6a]

        Oh how good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity! [Ps 133:1]

        For the Lord your God will restore Your fortunes, bring you back in love... bring you together again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you. Even if your outcasts are at the ends of the world, from there the Lord your God will gather you...For the Lord again will delight in your well-being...since you will be heeding the Lord your God and keeping his commandments...once you return to the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. [Deuteronomy 30:3-4, 9b-10]

         Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. [Mark 10:52]

        We are truly all in "this" together ~ this life, this planet. And God makes it very clear in talking to the Servant in Isaiah, that it is God who put us here, gave us breath and spirit. The Servant is to be a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring prisoners from the dungeon. Too many times, we look at "others" as different than ourselves in skin color, nationality, religion, political views and reject those who aren't one of us. Then suddenly "they" become one of them, not to be trusted or valued as the full human person God created like ourselves and in God's own image. We are to care for each other with love as God has commanded and in so doing we show the depth (or shallowness) of our love for God. To prosper only ourselves and us may carry us in this time but we are called to open the eyes that are blind and, if we are only interested in distancing ourselves from them, we are the ones who are blind. Let us open our own eyes, follow God's commandments with love and we'll have our spiritual sight restored. As Jesus tells us, our faith will make us well.

Prayers of the People: Service Station, 21st Sunday after Pentecost

for Sunday, October 18, 2015, 21st Sunday after Pentecost, Yr B, Readings: Job 38-1-7 (34-41), Psalm 104:1-9, 25, 37b; Hebrews 5:1-10, Mark 10:35-45 

         Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: ...Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements ~ surely you know! Or stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? [Job 38: 1a,4-7]

    Bless the LORD, O my soul [Ps 104:1a]

         Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins...In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications...and he was heard because of his reverent submission. [Hebrews 5:1, 7b]

       So Jesus called them and said...whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you but be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. [Mark 10:42a, 43b-45]

       "There's just no good help anymore" seems to be a common complaint. "Full service no longer exists" is another. In an age of high technological achievement, engineering advancement, and more devices for instant information access than any one can possibly need or use, some days I seemingly spin in circles trying to find a simple answer to a simple question. Suddenly the wonders of life disappear in a haze of frustration, complaining, and wasted time. And then, God speaks through the lessons appointed for this week: WHERE WERE YOU when I laid the foundation of the earth? And my favorite line in all of Job: when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy. The bigger question for me is, where am I? 
       With much of the world in turmoil from so many sources, why am I frazzling over some temporary nonsense. While I'm far from being a high priest, I am very mortal and more than capable of offering prayers and supplication and some real sacrifice on behalf of others and for my own sin. Jesus may be the paragon of Full Service, but I can at least be a service station for some one along the way. I can start by praying for guidance, for renewal of faith, and the willingness to take my wants out of that inevitable moment that arrives and listen, be present, and help in whatever way is possible. Let my soul be the blessing that God is calling it to be. Let me be of service in Christ's name.

       At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. [Eucharistic Prayer C, Book of Common Prayer]

      It is easy enough to discover the bad news about the condition of our planet, from devastating weather to disastrous environmental events, to war and disease and it all needs our awareness, action, and God-ordered stewardship. But today, we celebrate. This is a moment to learn more and know this great gift of God, our Earth, more deeply. We re-examine its lushness, its highest peaks and deepest depths, the fragrances and the freshness; re-discover our companion creatures and the extraordinary life among the plants and organisms that support us. Marvel at the vastness of the oceans, the rhythm of the tides, the flow of rivers. We see what has gone before, where we are, and, all of our world's potential and what we are called to do about it. This Earth and her resources feeds our bodies and provides oxygen for our breath, and breath-taking beauty. How magnificent is Our Living Planet?! Let us behold our God's gracious hand and safeguard all of it for posterity.

St.Francis of Assisi [1182-1226] was born into a wealthy Italian merchant family as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone with the nickname of Francesco. While heading off to war in 1204, he turned back to Assisi after a vision directed him. Later he was moved to live in poverty after a pilgrimage to Rome. He founded the Order of the Friars Minor (known today as Fransicans), The Order of Poor Clares (for women) and The Third Order for men and women not able to live as itinerant preachers.

Prayers of the People, In the Beginning,1st Sunday in the Season of Creation '15

for Sunday, October 11, 2015 ~ Readings: Gen 1:1-31, Ps 33:1-11 [from the Anglican Chant by John Randall], Pope Francis*, John 1: 1-14 [from “The Message”]

Welcome to the 

Season of Creation!

        The Season of Creation 
originated in the Anglican Church of South Africa in 2008 and is designed for us to explore our faith from a Creation perspective. We are to realize our place in the order of God’s creating and to see and act upon the need to care for our entire life-support system - the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil in which we grow our crops - not merely humanity, but our total environment, as it pertains to ALL life. 

         From the early days of the Season of Creation at SsAM [www.SsAM.org], we established that “the primary aim of the events of the season is to enable adults and youth to celebrate and experience the inextricable link which binds together the destinies of all of God’s creatures.” It is a moment of pause to remind ourselves that God calls us to see “what great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions” and for us to renew our commitment to making real the biblical vision of the earth at unity with itself. It is a vision of human beings of all races, backgrounds and walks of life in local communities and among the nations of the earth, living together in love and peace with justice for all. "As disciples of Christ, we are called through our Baptismal Covenant, to be instruments for the healing of our broken world," and with a renewed commitment to personal and communal prayer and action.

         We will use Biblical and other readings that pertain to the specific theme of each of the 6 weeks. The alternate readings used will follow the prayers on this page.  

     We begin this Season at the Beginning. Professor Wangari Maathai,** 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, describes the Book of Genesis as "the book for environmentalists." "If we had been created on Tuesday," she said, "There would have been nowhere for us to stand! God, with infinite wisdom, waited until the last day!"

*A reading from Pope Francis:

          Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society. Moreover, when our hearts are authentically open to universal communion, this sense of fraternity excludes nothing and no one. It follows that our indifference or cruelty toward fellow creatures of this world sooner or later affects the treatment we mete out to other human beings. We have only one heart, and the same wretchedness which leads us to mistreat an animal will not be long in showing itself in our relationships with other people. Every act of cruelty toward any creature is “contrary to human dignity.” We can hardly consider ourselves to be fully loving if we disregard any aspect of reality: “Peace, justice, and the preservation of creation are three absolutely interconnected themes, which cannot be separated and treated individually without once again falling into reductionism.” Everything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river, and mother earth.

He was elected on March 13, 2013, and took the name of Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. The title of Pope is a title he holds ex officio as Bishop of Rome, and Sovereign/Head of State of the Vatican City.

**Professor Wangari Maathai [1940-2011], a Kenyan environmental and political activist, Member of Parliament as Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, was educated in the United States and in Kenya. In 2004, she was the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She was honored for "her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace".

Prayers of the People: In the Eye of the Believer, 20th Sunday after Pentecost

for Sunday, October 11, 2015, Yr B, Readings: Job 23:1-9, 16-17; Ps 22:1-15, Hebrews 4:12-16, Mark 10:17-31

          Oh that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling!...he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever by my judge.  

[Job 23:3, 6b-7]

          The word of God is living and active... able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart...Let us...approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. [Hebrews 4:12, 16]

          It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God...[but] for God all things are possible...many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

[Mark 10:25, 27b, 31]

        Poor Job! We're 23 chapters into his story and things are as grim as ever, or worse. And yet, he keeps trying, keeps wondering, keeps asking God, WHY?! But he answers for God as he knows deep in his faithful heart, that God would listen to reason and acquit him of these terrible trials, if only he could find God, if only he didn't feel forsaken. Yet, he doesn't give up; he perseveres. Would I? 

         The writer of Hebrews confirms what Job believes, that God does know our thoughts and intentions and further, because of Jesus, we are to be bold and ask God for what we need.

          And this week in the Gospel, a man grieves as he walks away from Jesus because he follows the commandments but doesn't want to let go of his earthly possessions. How many in this world this week have lost so much because of winds, floods, fires, war, and the everyday tragedies and tempests of life? How many of us say "I believe"and go about our every-day lives as if there was nothing we have to do differently, assured of our place in the front of the line. But will we cry "Where is God?" when the winds, floods, and tempests hit our lives?

          Job never stops asking for God to be present because hope keeps him going, as it does for us all even in the times when faith is weakest. And whether we wonder how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, or whether Jesus meant literally that a camel would have to go through that needle, Jesus tells us plainly, with God all things are possible.  It's all in the eye of a believer.

for Sunday, October 4, 2015, Year B, 19th Sunday after Pentecost, Readings: Job 1:1, 2:1-10; Ps 126, Hebrews 1:1-2:12, Mark 10:2-16

          The Lord said to Satan, "Very well, he is in your power; only spare his life."...In all this Job did not sin... [Job 2:6, 10b]

          Prove me, O Lord and try me; test my heart and mind. For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in faithfulness to you. [Ps 26:2-3]

          Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. [Hebrews 2:1]

          Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. [Mark 10:15]

          The Book of Job is far from easy to read, let alone to understand and receive direction. It is at once a debate or dialogue - between God and Satan*, Job and his wife, Job and his friends - it contains poetry, it is partly folk-tale. From the opening of this Book, we can hear the music of doom playing in the background; things will only get worse yet even now we are told In all this Job did not sin... How would we fare against such tribulation? 

          The Psalmist has us asking for the trouble that I have always been advised not to borrow! Do I really want to be tried and tested? I'm not sure that I am ready to be the next Job. If I succeed, how do I refrain from the sin of boasting? If I fail, how do I keep my faith?

          In the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews, we are given some help by the instruction to pay more attention to what God is telling us through all he has done and especially through Jesus - who is the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being. 

          And, even as Jesus is tested by the Pharisees, Jesus teaches the disciples, once again, this time as indignant, to let the children come forward and be welcomed fully and completely and with blessing. He teaches us all to be as these, feeling the peace and security of a child beloved of a parent so that we may receive the kingdom of God as a little child. Let us not drift away and lose the ability to love unconditionally as a child does. To hear and know the love and presence of God, through Jesus and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, will help us to accept and thrive within all that life provides. Whatever the tests may be, the difficult and the good (sometimes, it's easier to blame God when things go wrong; sometimes it's easier to forget God when things go well), whatever the twists and turns in the trials of faith, God is faithful to us, let us be faithful to God.

 *I find that an interesting aside is the concept of Satan, who appears in the texts of Abrahamic traditions (primarily, but not limited to, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) variously translated as "The Adversary", the "Devil", or "The Accuser". [click highlighted terms for more information]

Grant us the willingness to have even a small portion of the faith of Job, to pay greater attention to all we know of Your presence and love, and to live each day as Your true and beloved children.

Prayers of the People: Shake, Shake, Shake, 18th Sunday after Pentecost

for Sunday, September 27, 2015, 18 the Sunday after Pentecost , Year B, Readings: Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22; Ps 124, James 5:13-20, Mark 9: 38-50

      Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. [Ps 124:8]

      The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has sins will be forgiven...pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. [James 5:13-15, 16b]

      For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. [Mark 9:49-50]

      As always there is much that can be said about today's readings, including the one from Esther for which I provided no quote. Esther is a wonderful, romantic story - one of my favorites as I was growing up and one of the few books of the Bible I ever read all the way through until I was an adult. There are fascinating and significant historical and theological differences between its Jewish/Hebrew origins (it is the basis for the feast of Purim) and the later Greek/Christian translations with which we are most familiar. But for me it was a disconnect with the other appointed readings (not an unusual occurrence with the lectionary). 
      There are an array of commentaries, interpretations, explanations, contextual considerations, and perspectives for any part of the Bible that we are given to think about each week. Of course those are the basis for study, discussion, and sermonizing. I am always interested in the thoughts and ideas of others and how I can synthesize and clarify for myself and others. This week was no different and there was much to ponder and reflect upon and yet there was something simpler calling to me from the collective words of the Psalm, James, and Mark.  I found it in the image above: Serve. Act. Love. Teach. And, from James, Pray. Let's just go with the basics this week, shall we? We can shake up our faith, shake up our intentions and shake our prayers over all that we do for, with, and in the Name of the LORD.
