Prayers of the People: One for All and All are One ~ Trinity Sunday, 1st Sunday after Pentecost WLWC* Yr C

For Sunday, June 15, 2025; Readings: Hosea 11:1-4, Psalm 130:5-8, Psalm 131:1-3;
2 Peter 1:16-18, Matthew 26:16-20

   When Israel was a child, I loved them, and out of Egypt I called my child…I led them with human ties and bonds of love…I bent down and fed them. [Hosea 11:1, 4a,c]

   I wait for the Womb of Creation, my soul waits, and in her word I hope. My soul keeps watch for the Creator, more than those who watch for the morning…hope in the Mother of Creation! For with the Creator of All there is faithful love and with her is abundant redemption. [Psalm 130:5-7]

  Womb of Life, my heart is not lifted up, nor my eyes exalted. Rather I have soothed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with her mother…hope in the Wellspring of Life… [Psalm 131:1a, 2-3]

  For Christ from God the Sovereign received honor and glory, a voice came from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. [2 Peter 1:17]

   Then Jesus came and said to them saying, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  [Matthew 28:19-20]

    One part of the human condition is the occasionally obsessive need to be rational about the irrational, that is to make sense of out of what we don't understand so that we can find something of value or at least usable in it. Great thinkers and ponderers, researchers and scientific minds alike, seek to grasp the ungraspable and define the indefinable. We often strive to know what is unknowable and explain the unexplainable, or at least contain the concept in some easy mortal definition. And there is nothing more irrational, indefinable, or ungraspable than the theologically and intellectually mysterious Christian concept of The Trinity, One God in Three Persons. All manner of councils, creeds, arguments, and conjectures have sought to develop a workable, understandable, useful definition out of a non-scriptural but closely held doctrine of many Christian faith communities to which some simply choose to discount because it cannot be contained in a comfortable box. As Dr. Gafney reminds us, those of us who have realized and those who might not have realized, that the concept of the traditional Father, Son, and Holy Spirit nomenclature, allows men and boys to hear themselves and their pronouns identified with God to the exclusion and invisibility of women and girls and nonbinary persons. She says further that, “This exclusion is formative for men and boys casting gender hierarchy from which they benefit in divine terms…in the language of the Church… trinitarian language…remain[s] a sanctified proclamation of male divinity.”
   While recognizing that the traditional language will always have a place in the liturgical lexicon, one of Dr. Gafney’s Lectionary project’s goals is to offer more ways to name God drawn from her own translations of the Scriptures while using expanded and often more feminine titles for God. A few of her suggestions for the Trinity are: Sovereign, Savior, and Shelter; Majesty, Mercy, and Mystery; Creator, Christ, and Companion; Potter, Vessel, and Holy Fire; Life, Liberation, and Love.
   One of my absolute favorite thoughts about this same idea comes from Sister Sandra M. Schneiders, I.H.M., a renowned New Testament Scholar and Professor, writing in U.S. Catholic magazine for May 1, 1990 in her article: God is More Than Two Men and a Bird.
    This is the Sunday which sends many practiced and learnéd preachers [who have told me this], running for the list of available surrogates to fill in so as to dodge unanswerable questions. With the millions of pages of commentaries, books, treatises, etc., available on Google, wiki-places, and untold thousands of websites, and the innumerable hours of sermons we've attempted to listen to (or write), 2 millennia later, we're still trying to put the pieces and Persons of the Trinity together in a way that helps us to explain to ourselves, let alone others, just what is it that we believe. Step back, take a breath, some things are simply not simple. Mystery is just that. Faith is a mystery ~ outside of any and all types of boxes ~ as is the Peace that passes all understanding. Our Trinity: Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier is truly One for All and All are One. AMEN. Alleluia! Thanks be to our God.

   One of my favorite ways to attempt a somewhat workable sense of the Trinity – gender language aside – is through a portion of a 7th century creed from Dublin known as Tírechán’s Creed from his biography of St. Patrick ~ when speaking of God it says:

He has a Son who is co-eternal with himself;
   and similar in all respects to himself;
   and neither is the Son younger than the Father,
   nor is the Father older than the Son;
   and the Holy Spirit breathes in them.
And the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are inseparable.

LET US, GOD’S PEOPLE, PRAY

Leader:  ~ O Womb of Creation, most Holy God, lift our hearts as we awaken each day to know that your presence is always within us, if we but seek to find you. Exalt the eyes of our minds to see that our morning watch is constantly fulfilled, as through your faithful love you soothe and quiet our souls.

                                             Wellspring of Life
RESPONSE:      In you is our hope and our redemption

~ O Womb of Creation, feed the consciousness and consciences of all those who choose to govern in our World, in our Country, and in our Community. Fill them with an intensity of desire, to remember the human ties and bonds of love bestowed by you for the sacred benefit of humankind, including themselves. Restore that desire in each of us as we walk together in the life you have given us to live.  We pray especially for: add your own petitions

                                                   Wellspring of Life
              In you is our hope and our redemption

~ O Womb of Creation, grant endurance and steadfast faith to all in continuous suffering of body, mind, or spirit, and increasing energy to those who give support. We now join our hearts to pray for those in need… add your own petitions

                                               Wellspring of Life
          In you is our hope and our redemption

~ O Womb of Creation, relieve distress and comfort those in mourning, as you delight in the arrival of the souls of your beloved, returning Home for new life everlasting. We pray especially for: add your own petitions

                                               Wellspring of Life
          In you is our hope and our redemption

O Womb of Creation, we pause in this moment to offer You our other heartfelt thanksgivings, intercessions, petitions, and memorials, aloud or silently… add your own petitions

                                               Wellspring of Life
          In you is our hope and our redemption

~ O Womb of Creation, continually replenish the stores of spiritual discernment for all who inspire our explorations and exercise of faith. We give you special thanks for all they do and ask for your continuing grace and blessings, as we go forth together in Your service. We pray especially for: add your own petitions

                                               Wellspring of Life
          In you is our hope and our redemption

The Celebrant adds: Creator of All, our Triune God of the Heavens, the Earth, and All that is known and unknown, you are our complete and infinite source of faith, love, hope, and redemption. Urge our earth-bound hearts, through our Baptismal Covenant, to seek higher fulfillment as heirs, proclaimers, and teachers of Your eternal Truth in this life, through our thoughts, words, and actions. We ask through Jesus, our Redeemer; and the Holy Spirit, our Sustainer; who, co-eternal and co-equal with You, reign as our One True God, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayers of the People: The Mystery Continues ~ Trinity Sunday, 1st Sunday after Pentecost '25 RCL Yr C

For Sunday, June 15, 2025; Readings: Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31; Canticle 13, Romans 5:1-5, John 16:12-15

   Does not Wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice?  [Proverbs 8:1-4]

  Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; we will praise you and highly exalt you forever. [Canticle 13, from the Apocrypha, Daniel 3:52 ff]

   Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; and we boast in our hope of sharing the Glory of God....we also boast in our sufferings…that produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given us. [Romans 5:1-5]

   When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth…and declare to you the things that are to come…All that the Father has is mine. For this reason [the Spirit] will take what is mine and declare it to you. [John 16:13a,c; 15]

    One part of the human condition is the occasionally obsessive need to be rational about the irrational, that is to make sense of out of what we don't understand so that we can find something of value or usable in it. Great thinkers and ponderers, researchers and scientific minds alike, seek to grasp the ungraspable and define the indefinable. We often strive to know what is unknowable and explain the unexplainable, or at least contain the concept in some mortal definition. And there is nothing more irrational, indefinable, or ungraspable than the theologically and intellectually mysterious Christian concept of The Trinity, One God in Three Persons. All manner of councils, creeds, arguments, and conjectures have sought to develop a workable, understandable, useful definition out of a non-scriptural but closely held doctrine of many Christian faith communities to which many simply choose to set aside because it cannot be contained in a comfortable box.
    To complicate matters further, the ancient understanding of gender hierarchy has excluded feminine pronouns and the mere mention of such exclusion sets some male, female, and binary persons into defensive postures. Yet the truth is simple, to assign only male gender to all three persons of the Trinity is exclusionary and belies the wealth of knowledge and contributions by all others. God has been written as “he” since scripture was first written down, by men. Yet in the Hebrew Scriptures/aka Old Testament, Wisdom, which Christians designate as the Holy Spirit, is feminine, such as in the Proverbs 8:1-4 passage used this week, even in the King James Version. While Jesus was sent as a man into a male-dominated society, there are many, many instances of women as his disciples, as well as among Paul’s own followers and disciples, that go unknown or at the very least unrecognized, by the Revised Common Lectionary as well as those denominations in which Pastors/Preachers, without a designated lectionary, choose to use or not to use certain readings.
    One of my absolute favorite quotes about this same idea comes from Sister Sandra M. Schneiders, I.H.M., a renowned New Testament Scholar and Professor, writing in U.S. Catholic magazine for May 1, 1990 in her article: God is More Than Two Men and a Bird. The title alone is food for thought no matter your gender.
    This is the Sunday which sends many practiced and learnéd preachers running for the list of available surrogates to fill in so as to dodge those unanswerable questions. The group of lessons appointed for today are, as usual, not terribly helpful in expounding upon what we, of those particular Trinitarian groups, attempt to understand or, at least, accept without question. That said, the passage from Paul's Letter to the Romans gave us a sort of taste of the workings of our co-equal and co-eternal*, and consubstantial (of one and the same substance, essence, or nature), whole and entire God. In John's Gospel, Jesus, still in his pre-Pentecost Farewell Discourse in this reading, is explaining to the disciples how they will soon understand all they need to know through the coming of the Holy Spirit. They must have been nearly cross-eyed after all they had experienced in the prior month.
     With the millions of pages of commentaries, books, treatises, etc., available on Google, wiki-places, and untold thousands of websites, and the innumerable hours of sermons we've attempted to listen to (or write), 2 millennia later we're still trying to put the pieces and Persons of the Trinity together in a way that helps us to explain to ourselves, let alone others, what it is that we believe. Step back, take a breath, some things are simply not simple. Mystery is just that. Faith is a mystery ~ outside of any and all types of boxes ~ as is the Peace that passes all understanding.     *Another of my favorite ways to attempt a somewhat workable sense of the Trinity – gender language aside – is through a piece of a 6th century creed from Dublin known as Tírechán’s Creed ~ when speaking of God it says:

   and neither is the Son younger than the Father,
   nor is the Father older than the Son;
   and the Holy Spirit breathes in them.
And the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are inseparable.

LET US, GOD’S PEOPLE, PRAY

Leader: ~ Holy and Blessed Trinity, as Almighty Creator and Lord of All, as Lord of Revelation and Salvation through Christ Jesus, and as Lord and Giver of Truth and Life through the Holy Spirit: You embody the eternal mystery of One God in Three Persons. Fill us with the courage and conviction to open to the love You have poured into our hearts that we may live as Your vessels of faith in action.

O God of Grace and Glory
RESPONSE:          To You, O Lord, we pray

~ Holy and Blessed Trinity, let Wisdom raise her voice in calling for the necessary ethical and moral character in all the leaders of this World, this Country, and this Community, giving hope in actions for universal justice, mercy, and peace. We pray especially for: add your own petitions

Prayers of the People: The Peace of Faith Ablaze ~ Pentecost! WLWC* Yr C

For Sunday, June 8, 2025; Readings: Acts 2:1-18, Psalm 104:1-4, 27-30; Romans 8:14-27,
John 14:8-17

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in the same place. And there came suddenly from heaven a sound like the sweeping of a mighty wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Then there appeared among them divided tongues, as of fire, and one rested on each of them. And all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak in other tongues just as the Spirit gave them to speak.
[Acts 2:1-4]

  Bless the Fount of Life, O my soul. Mother of All, my God…She is the one who makes the winds her celestial messengers, fire and flame her ministers…You send forth your Spirit…and you renew the face of the earth. [Psalm 104:1a, 4, 30]

  …you have received a spirit of adoption through which we cry, “Abba! Father!” It is that same spirit who bears witness with our spirit that we are daughters and sons of God. And if daughters and sons, then heirs, heirs of God and heirs of Chris…For in hope we were saved…Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as is necessary, but that very Spirit intercedes…according to the will of God. [Romans 8:15b-17, 24, 27b]

  Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me…Very truly I tell you all, the one who believes in me will also do the works I do and even will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father…If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and God will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth…You know her, because she abides with you, and she will be in you. [John 14:11a, 12, 15-17]

      The word Pentecost is derived from a Greek word meaning “fiftieth.” In Judaism, Pentecost is the holiday of Shavuot [shah-voo-oat] or The Festival of Weeks,
celebrated seven weeks, or the 50th day, after the first seder of Passover. It commemorates the wheat harvest in Exodus, and also God's giving of the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai. In Christianity it is the 50th day, or 7 weeks, after Easter, 10 days after Christ’s Ascension.
       The disciples of Jesus, perhaps still struggling with their understandings of and ongoing roles after the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension, gathered together most likely for the comfortably familiar Shavuot remembrance and feast. Then, as we are told, suddenly from heaven came a rush of violent wind and just as suddenly tongues of fire appeared above their heads and each one immediately began speaking in a different language. From that moment they were able to spread the word of God in Christ across the world with the Holy Spirit granting each voice in each language the precise interpretation of Christ’s saving words and instructions ~ in context of culture, place, and time, not merely by repetition.
      In this fiftieth day from the most recent celebration of Easter, we are, again and always, called to know that we are filled with the Holy Spirit, called to live into the belief in Christ that we claim or want, and, called to keep the Commandments whose giving on Mt. Sinai we may also commemorate on this day and reaffirm as our life principles.
      On this Birthday of the Church*– let us claim our heritage as children of God and use the language of love to be as Jesus has shown us to be. Let the teachings of Jesus not only be our governing rules but also our method and practice of daily living. In our times of suffering and our times of joy and in our times of everyday routines, let us breathe deeply and receive the power of the Holy Spirit to un-trouble our hearts and fill us with the Peace of Christ, the peace that passes all understanding; the peace of our own spirits that reaches out and gives peace to another’s.
      Today is the day to stop merely knowing the story. Today is the day to start again, to re-experience our sense of faith as it is filled with Wind and Fire, from and in the Spirit – to be amazed and astonished!  We always have the Spirit within us, and God’s grace, and the love and Salvation of Christ for the merest wanting of it. Even as we can sense a peace of heart in the most exciting moments in life, when all the hoped-for pieces fall into place, so too, can we experience the peace in the excitement of faith restored, renewed, and ablaze with the love and salvation of Christ Jesus. Let us rejoice and be glad and joy-filled, and alive in it! Bless the Lord, O my soul!

       *As the Birthday of the Church, Pentecost marks the official beginning of the ministry of the Apostles beyond their local area and into the broader world. The descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire imbued them, and each of us by extension, with extraordinary gifts to bring the message of Jesus by word and example into all facets and phases of our Christian life. As the ashes of Ash Wednesday open us to the season of reflection and repentance in Lent, the soul-fire of Pentecost reignites our faith and fervor, restored and renewed in Christ to carry his message forward in our everyday thoughts, words, and actions.

As you release us from fear, may the actions of our lives sing as praise to the you, O Lord our God. We pray especially for: add your own petitions
                                            Spirit of the Living God
                                            Fall afresh on us

The Celebrant adds:  Lord of Enduring Glory, guide the Spirit of Pentecost to set our souls ablaze once again, that we may keep Your commandments, do greater works, and live as joint heirs of Your eternal kingdom. We ask through Jesus, our Redeemer Christ; and the Holy Spirit, the Sacred Fire in our souls; who together with You reign as One God, now and forever.  Amen.

As the ashes of Ash Wednesday open us to the season of reflection and repentance in Lent, the soul-fire of Pentecost reignites our faith and fervor, restored and renewed in Christ to carry his message forward in our everyday thoughts, words, and actions.

LET US, GOD’S PEOPLE, PRAY

Leader:  ~ Abba, Redeemer, Advocate, infuse us, your children, with the fire of your Spirit and the Peace of Christ. Strengthen us to bear witness with you, to inhale the rush of your heavenly breath, rejoice in Your Presence, and bless you with the work of our souls.

                                             Spirit of the Living God
    RESPONSE:              Fall afresh on us

~ Abba, Redeemer, Advocate, impel us to speak in the language of your Truth to the leaders of this Earth, this Country, and this Community, on behalf of those crying in the wilderness of lethal poverty, merciless injustice, faithless intolerance, and crushing despair. We pray especially for: add your own petitions

                                            Spirit of the Living God
                                            Fall afresh on us

~ Abba, Redeemer, Advocate, relieve the fevers of critical illness, depression, or other desperate circumstance, and energize all who give them care and support. We now join our hearts together to pray for those in need… add your own petitions

                                            Spirit of the Living God
                                            Fall afresh on us

~ Abba, Redeemer, Advocate, instill Your care and comfort into the hearts of those who grieve, as the souls of all who have reached the shores of Heaven, now rise and dance in Your everlasting joy and glory.  We pray especially for: add your own petitions

                                            Spirit of the Living God
                                            Fall afresh on us

~ Abba, Redeemer, Advocate, we pause in this moment to offer You our other heartfelt intentions and petitions, aloud or silently… add your own petitions

                                            Spirit of the Living God
                                            Fall afresh on us

~ Abba, Redeemer, Advocate, un-trouble our hearts as you amplify our Spirit-given abilities, that together with those chosen to lead us in Your Church, we may be steadfast in our journey.

Amen.

Meditation Moment: Ascension Day '25

For Thursday, May 29, 2025, Ascension Day, Readings: Acts 1:1-11, Ps 47,
 Ephesians 1:15-23, Luke 24:44-53

Then [Jesus] led them out as far as Bethany, and,
lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them,
he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.
And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy;
and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
[Luke 24:50-53]

          Forty Days after Easter comes the Ascension of the Resurrected Christ into Heaven. One of the five major milestones in the life of Christ [the others are baptism, transfiguration, crucifixion, and resurrection], the Ascension is professed in both the Nicene and Apostles' Creeds. Whether, actual, mystical or metaphorical, it is one of the great feasts of the Christian liturgical calendar. It signifies the completion of his earthly presence as he takes his divine presence seated at the right hand of the Father [Nicene Creed, Book of Common Prayer]
        The readings for today give us a direction for our own earthly lives. In the Acts of the Apostles we hear that as Christ's body was being elevated, suddenly two men in robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven?" From Ephesians, Paul prays, ...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ...may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe...

Holy Jesus, Son of God, as Your Church we are the Body of Christ.  On this Ascension Day, let us ascend in our hearts, minds, and souls, and raise our own prayers that we may be disciples in our own day, to care for all the People of God. Guide us as we seek to discover You in our daily thoughts, words, and actions. Grant us that wisdom to know the hope to which we are called with enlightened hearts, and be eager for the time when You, who has been taken up...into heaven, will come in the same way... Amen. Alleluia!
