Your Servant Josephine led the way in her own time to courageously and relentlessly advocate on behalf of women and girls as fully human persons. From campaigning for higher education, pushing legislation to increase the age of sexual consent, and to succeed in having laws repealed that diminished and exploited women, especially those engaging in prostitution, Mrs. Butler was a force beyond our comprehension for her time. Help us realize that we must continue her valiant efforts. Let us not avert our eyes to the very real, very prevalent issues of sexual violence and exploitation of human beings in our own times ~ in the worst parts of the world and in the nicest parts of our comfortable lives. Rape as a political weapon, human trafficking for greed and lust, domestic violence, child pornography and prostitution ~ all are symptoms of a dissolving social ethic that only benefits the few who have power, and all thrive when we, the "good people," look away. Help us, Lord, to do the work You have given us to do and actively see to it that all Your children are safe and genuinely loved. amen.
Prayer: A conversation with The Higher Other who lives within each of us. An invitation to vent, to re-think, to ask, and to rest.

Meditation Moment in Eastertide ~ Saturday Week 2 '23
Your precious Creation in all of its bounty is as equally important in the scheme of life as we humans are. You have given us plant life, sea life, creatures of the land and all that our life requires to be sustained. Help me stop and look, touch, hear, breathe in all that this Earth, our island home, has to offer. Help me know a tree, a flower, a bird beyond its classification and name. Help me to know this Earth as more than just land, air, and bodies of water to support me. Help me know it as a partner in life, mutually beneficial, living and breathing as I do and requiring as much of my participation and care in its health as I need from its participation in mine. Help me pay more attention to the destruction of our Earth and its air and water by the convenience of the packaging we use, the trash islands in our Oceans, and heat and fumes generated by our rabid consumption of fossil fuels.
Maybe, if we all learn to know that the dirt under our feet is as necessary to our life as are all the pretty creatures and lakes and oceans, we will not only take action for its better care, it will take better care of us. Perhaps in that way, more of us will see all of creation as necessary, whether wild, tame, cultivated, animal, mineral, and vegetable. And in those ways we will finally understand that every human on this Earth is also a partner in life, mutually beneficial, living and breathing as we do and requiring as much of us as we need from each of them. Maybe then, we'll all have a true relationship with humanity and our planet beyond just the names of a few people and a few trees. amen.

Meditation Moment in Eastertide ~ Friday in Week 2 '23
The calendar highlights the dates that are burned deeply into my heart with a mix of sweetness, sadness, and even a smile. And on each of those days I open the door to my inner room of memories and sit with them as if in a familiar attic. I sift through the virtual folders and boxes that hold remnants of the most meaningful people and times of my life now past. And on each of those days I need Your presence to surround me while winnowing through the highs and the lows of all that has been. Most importantly, please be here while I caress the remembrances of the all-too-brief moments with those now gone who I have loved and who have loved me. Give me Your peace when I go from this room until it is time again to remember. Strengthen my resolve to walk more fully into today, into all that is now, and all that is yet to be. amen.

Meditation Moment in Eastertide ~ Wednesday Week 2 '23
I do acknowledge that sometimes I am so busy thinking about what I want to say that I forget to listen to what someone else is saying! I'm learning, slowly, to give others their air time even though I'm sure my response is the better comment and the most necessary. (Yeah, ok, I'll work on that thought, too.) I have experienced the rare moment when I feel listened to, as if what I think and say and feel are important to someone. Other times I can go on and on about my stuff trying to re-experience the feeling of importance. But when I'm being consciously more aware, I have had the right moments of just being present and listening to someone in need while letting whatever I wanted to say go away unspoken. That is an amazing and humbling feeling.
Best advice for good listening:

Meditation Moment in Eastertide ~ Tuesday, Week 2 '23
I am chastened by the recognition of how often I do the check-list thing and think about how to get all that I deserve. Then I look back over my life and worry that I might actually get all that I deserve...Please, God, spare me that, at least some of it!
Help me, again and always, to discover Your peace within myself, so that I can work to reflect it outwardly to others. Help me to measure my life in gratitude, not wants or expectations. Grant me the consciousness to spend more of my allotted days seeking forgiveness for my faults and forgiving others for theirs, rather than me judging us both harshly. I want to wake each morning, remember each noon, and when I lay me down to sleep, feeling and knowing the grace You bestow on us all. I want to look beyond myself and live into the gifts You have given each of us to use generously on behalf of all Your people.
O Lord, I am also chastened by the recognition that what good I perceive is owed to me in this life is exponentially less than what I owe You, Your People, and, Your Creation. It is past time for me to begin re-payment so I'll start today even if slowly. amen.

Prayers of the People: On THAT Road Again ~ 3rd Sunday of Easter '23 Yr A
Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit..." [Acts 2:38]
I love the LORD, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him...Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his servants...O LORD I am your servant...I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the Name of the LORD. [Psalm 116: 1, 13, 14a]
Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth...You have been born anew...of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. [1 Peter 1:22a, 23]
